How to Choose a Mentor

How to Choose a Mentor

A mentor is a very valuable asset in any business or personal situation, especially if you are striving to meet certain goals. Turning to someone who has experienced what you are going through and can offer sound, knowledgeable advice and good networking connections can mean the difference between success and failure.

Not just anyone can be your mentor, however. There are certain qualities and values a good mentor has. When you are trying to choose a mentor, be on the lookout for these things.

Style and Personality

You will want your personality and leadership styles to mesh with that of your mentor. If you are take charge and they are more inclined to stand back, their advice may not work well for you. Similarly, if your potential mentor is very outgoing but you prefer to do your best work in the background, the same techniques may not be successful for both of you.

Resources

Sort out what you need from your mentor — is it business connections, a person to bounce ideas off, or someone who is in the same industry but is a few steps ahead of you? Be sure your mentor is able to provide what you want, and also, that you are not asking too much of one person.

Willingness

Mentorship should also be a two way street, in some regards. Make sure your mentor of choice is someone to whom you can show gratitude without feeling awkward or strange. While you are the one being helped the most, it does not hurt to say thank you as much as you can.

Your mentor may be right in front of you — as a family member, colleague, spiritual advisor, or other respectable person in your life. You may not have to look far to choose a mentor, but choose wisely and take your time.
